Worship & Music

Worship in the Episcopal Church is liturgical and sacramental. If you have been to a Roman Catholic or Lutheran service, you will find our service is similar in many ways. Some parts stay the same every week. Some parts change every week, and some parts change seasonally. Our worship follows a formal pat-tern based on the earliest forms of Christian worship. It includes offerings of music and prayer, readings from the Bible, and a sermon.

Lay members play an important role each week in our services. From preparing for services by helping in the Altar Guild, to singing in the choir or serving as a Lay Eucharistic Minister, all members are invited to consider volunteering in one of our Worship Ministries.

Acolytes & Crucifers | Altar Guild | Baptismal Guild | Choir
Guitarists & Song Leaders | Lectors & LEM’s | Ushers | Wedding Guild

Acolytes & Crucifers - This is an important ministry for the youth of the parish, as they play an essential role during church services. Acolytes are responsible for lighting and extinguishing the candles, and carrying the torches for the processional and recessional. Acolytes are also responsible for marking the pews during communion. Crucifers are responsible for carrying the cross, helping prepare the altar for the consecration of communion, and assisting with the offering plates. Acolytes generally start in 5th grade and then graduate to Crucifers in the 9th grade.

Altar Guild - The Altar Guild is a group of people who have organized into 5 subgroups, one for every week of a month, for the purpose of preparing the church for that week's services. Their preparations include the maintenance and positioning of the altar hangings, candles, crosses, linens and all parts of the Eucharist. Membership requires initial training, work of about two hours on one Saturday morning per month, and preparation/cleanup for one service on Sunday of that weekend. When the date for a wedding, funeral, or other special service such as Evensong or Ash Wednesday comes during that week, those members prepare for that event also.

Baptismal Guild- All Saints’ is blessed to have many babies born each year, and accordingly, many baptisms celebrated. The Baptismal Guild makes beautiful keepsake banners for each child, greets the families, and makes sure they have everything they need to make their special day go as smoothly as possible.

Adult Choir - Music, whether traditional or contemporary, is an important part of worship at All Saints’. The adult choir plays a significant role in providing that music on a weekly basis at the 11 a.m. service. This is a group of committed and faithful members who range from young adults to young-at-heart adults who love to sing and love to be in community with one another.

We are always open to new members of any level of musical ability. The scripture says “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord.” It does not say to “make a perfect noise” or “make a noise with a trained or experienced voice"! Come join us anytime to experience a joyful rehearsal each Wednesday evening from 6:45-8:45, September through May, in the David and Katy Smith Choir Room.

Guitarists & Songleaders
One of the most fulfilling ministries for some people in our parish is playing the guitar and leading the songs for the 5:30 p.m. service. The simple, folk-style music for this service comes from the Alleluia II songbook, which was compiled and published for the Diocese of Alabama’s Cursillo movement. Typically, there is one song leader and two guitarists who practice together about 45 minutes before the service to lead the music for that day. Each musician usually plays once a month. This service provides a unique opportunity to share your musical talents with All Saints’!

Lectors & Lay Eucharistic Ministers - The LEM is the person that assists the priest(s) in the distribution of the bread and wine during the worship service. Lay Eucharist Ministry is a great opportunity for people who want to be involved in the ministry of the church but do not want a "speaking part”. It is also one of the few ministries where one is able to offer the grace of God in such a tangible way.

Ushers - Ushers are usually the first people visitors and members see each Sunday morning. If you enjoy meeting people and helping direct visitors, this ministry may be perfect for you. Ushers typically serve one service per month.

Wedding Guild - Our Wedding Guild works with couples planning to be married to make sure their special day goes as planned.
